Public Health Is Identifying Close Contacts After A Tuberculosis Case At West Texas A&M
Written by Kayla Williams · Filed September 29, 2026

Amarillo Public Health is working with West Texas A&M University after a person with tuberculosis spent time on the Canyon campus. Officials will contact people who had prolonged or repeated close contact while the person was infectious. The entire campus does not need testing. Tuberculosis spreads through the air when a person with active disease of the lungs or throat coughs, speaks or sings, usually after shared indoor exposure. It is not typically spread through handshakes, food, drinks or surfaces. Symptoms can include a cough lasting three weeks or longer, chest pain, fatigue, weight loss, fever, chills or night sweats. Anyone contacted should follow the testing instructions provided.
