Amarillo Schools Released Students After Alert
Written by KAYLA WILLIAMS · Filed October 14, 2026

Amarillo High School and Puckett Elementary received the all clear to release students Tuesday after police activity near the campuses prompted lockdowns and disrupted dismissal.
Police said someone was seen near Amarillo High wearing what appeared to be body armor. Officers searched the area, but the person had not been located in the latest update.
A message to Amarillo High parents described a potential threat in the surrounding area rather than on campus. The school went into lockdown after receiving that notification. At Puckett, the police response affected students’ departure.
The reported sighting was near the school, and the lockdown was a protective response while officers investigated. The public account did not establish that someone entered either campus.
Police said officers would remain in the area after students were cleared to leave. Details about the person’s identity, intentions or whether any weapon was present remain unconfirmed. Information is still developing.
