CHRISTY MARTINEZ GARCIA USES HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH TO PUSH FOR LUBBOCK’S NEXT GENERATION OF LEADERS

Lubbock native Christy Martinez Garcia is marking Hispanic Heritage Month by urging younger residents to move from attending community events to serving on the boards and commissions where decisions are made. Garcia founded Latino Lubbock Magazine two decades ago and has helped build traditions including the Cinco de Mayo parade and Vamos a Pescar. She now serves on the Lubbock City Council. Her message is that representation grows through sustained civic work, not a single celebration. She is encouraging residents to learn how local government functions through programs such as Lubbock 101, then apply for public service roles that often receive little attention but shape neighborhoods, budgets and long term priorities.
