Josephine Formed Off the East Coast With 65 mph Winds

Subtropical Storm Josephine formed off the East Coast Wednesday, bringing a new named storm into a weather system that has already been affecting coastal communities. Its initial reported strength was 65 mph, with the center about 265 miles south of Nantucket.

The storm developed over the Gulf Stream as it began separating from a nearby front. Its forecast path takes it north northeast before turning northeast and moving away from the East Coast by Friday.

Gusty winds are expected across parts of the Northeast into Thursday. Long Island and eastern Massachusetts could see gusts of 30 to 40 mph, while Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard could exceed 50 mph.

Coastal flooding remains a concern in parts of the Chesapeake Bay into Thursday or early Friday. Showers are also possible around Cape Cod and Rhode Island, though the rainfall forecast is relatively limited.

Travelers headed to the region should watch coastal conditions and wind. The forecast calls for conditions to ease by the weekend.
