Strengthening Isaias Brings Hurricane Risk To The Gulf Coast

Isaias is strengthening in the Gulf, with forecasts calling for it to become a hurricane before reaching the northern Gulf Coast late Friday or early Saturday.

The latest forecast placed potential landfall toward the central and eastern Gulf Coast. Hurricane watches covered Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, to Indian Pass in the Florida Panhandle.

Forecasters warned of storm surge along a wider stretch of coastline, with heavy rainfall and flooding possible inland. Some Florida communities issued evacuation orders. Florida and Alabama declared emergencies.

Lubbock residents with relatives or travel plans in that region can follow local evacuation notices and changing travel conditions. These alerts concern the Florida Panhandle, a different region from the Texas Panhandle.

The track and timing can change. Lubbock’s current forecast calls for dry weather today.
