LUBBOCK MOM QUESTIONS CAVAZOS RESTROOM RULE AFTER DAUGHTER SAYS STUDENTS GET ONE CLASSROOM BATHROOM TRIP A WEEK

A Lubbock mother is publicly questioning restroom and student socializing rules at Cavazos Middle School after saying her eighth grade daughter was told she could only leave each class to use the restroom once per week.

Jodi Hix addressed Lubbock ISD and Cavazos directly, writing, “Concerned parent here. Why are the students being hindered from socializing at lunch and before school by being basically assigned seating in the auditorium and cafeteria? How are they supposed to make friends?”

But Hix said the restroom issue was her biggest concern.

“Why am I being told students only get 1 restroom trip out of class per week?” she wrote. “I’m sorry, but using the restroom is NOT a privilege.”

Hix questioned whether passing periods and lunch provide enough time for every student who needs a restroom.

“How many people do you know, especially children, that can go on demand or on a schedule?” she wrote. “Especially girls on their monthly cycle. They can’t and don’t control that.”

She said her daughter told her that going to the restroom during class more than once in a week could result in disciplinary action.

“BUT YOU ARE TELLING MY 8TH GRADER THAT IF SHE HAS TO GO DURING CLASS MORE THAN 1 TIME A WEEK SHES GETTING WRITTEN UP?” Hix wrote.

Hix later clarified in the comments that she was referring to “1 bathroom break per class per week.”

She also said the issue has been especially frustrating because her daughter otherwise enjoys her experience at the school.

“She loves her counselor, she loves her teachers, but these two things bother her and the bathroom thing really bothers me,” Hix wrote.

The post drew comments from several other parents and former LISD families who said they had experienced similar disagreements about restroom access at other campuses. Those individual claims have not been independently verified.

It is also not yet clear whether the restriction described by Hix is an official Cavazos Middle School policy, a classroom level procedure or part of a broader effort to limit students leaving instructional areas.

Hix made her position to her daughter clear.

“This mom told her that if she is told no she cannot go to just walk out of class and I will deal with it,” she wrote.

The situation is raising a larger question for Lubbock parents about where schools should draw the line between protecting classroom instruction time and allowing students to address basic personal needs during the school day.
