Medicare Enrollment Opens Thursday

Lubbock residents with Medicare can begin reviewing and changing health and prescription coverage Thursday, October 15, as open enrollment begins.

The window runs through December 7. Changes submitted by the deadline take effect January 1, 2027, making this the period to compare coverage before the new year.

Depending on their current coverage, beneficiaries can change Medicare Advantage plans, switch between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage, or change a separate prescription drug plan.

For families, the review includes more than the monthly premium. Doctors, pharmacies, prescriptions and other costs affect whether coverage fits someone’s needs. A plan that worked this year deserves another look before it is carried into 2027.

Switching to Original Medicare can involve a separate drug plan and questions about supplemental coverage. Free insurance counseling is available through State Health Insurance Assistance Programs. Medicare questions can be directed to (800) 633 4227.
