Social Security Raise Will Average $75 a Month

People receiving Social Security will get a 3.6% benefit increase in 2027, with the average retirement payment rising by $75 a month.

The adjustment begins in January for nearly 72 million Social Security beneficiaries. Increased payments for about 7.3 million people receiving Supplemental Security Income begin December 31. Some people are in both groups.

Eligible recipients across West Texas will receive the increase. The $75 figure is an average, and individual changes depend on the benefit a person receives.

For example, a $2,000 monthly benefit would rise by $72 before deductions under a 3.6% adjustment. A person’s deposited payment can differ from the gross benefit shown in a notice.

Notices will explain the new amount and deductions. Online notices begin arriving in late November, while paper notices are scheduled for December.

The annual adjustment follows a formula tied to changes in a consumer price index. It is separate from decisions about when to claim retirement benefits.
