Social Security will rise 3.6% in 2027
Written by KAYLA WILLIAMS · Filed October 16, 2026

West Texas residents receiving Social Security will see a 3.6% annual benefit increase in 2027, following an announcement Wednesday.
The adjustment begins with January payments for nearly 72 million Social Security beneficiaries. Increased Supplemental Security Income payments for about 7.3 million recipients begin December 31. Some people receive both types of benefits.
The average monthly retirement benefit is expected to increase by $75. That is an average across recipients, rather than a flat amount added to every check.
For illustration, a $2,000 benefit would increase by $72 before deductions when the 3.6% adjustment is applied. An individual’s deposit also depends on any deductions shown in the benefit notice.
People with personal Social Security accounts can begin viewing notices in late November. Those receiving paper notices should expect them in December.
The adjustment uses a federal inflation measure for urban wage earners and clerical workers. The adjustment is automatic.
