TRUMP IS NOW ON A $1 COIN AND THE GOVERNMENT IS SELLING THEM FOR MORE THAN FACE VALUE

A new $1 coin featuring President Donald Trump went on sale Wednesday as the United States celebrates its 250th anniversary.

The gold colored coin shows Trump on one side with the words “Liberty,” “In God We Trust” and the years 1776 and 2026. The other side features the Presidential Seal and the number 250.

Despite its appearance, the coin does not contain gold. It is primarily made of copper along with zinc, manganese and nickel.

The coins are legal tender, meaning they can technically be spent as regular $1 coins, but buying them directly from the U.S. Mint will cost considerably more than face value. A roll containing 25 coins sells for $61, or about $2.44 per coin. A bag of 100 costs $154.50, or roughly $1.55 each.

Collectors also have another reason to search through the coins. The Mint produced 250,000 versions carrying a special July 4th mark and randomly placed them inside rolls and bags.

The release has also sparked debate because federal law generally restricts living people from appearing on American currency. The administration says authority provided for special designs celebrating America’s 250th anniversary allows the coin.

President Calvin Coolidge also appeared on a commemorative half dollar while serving as president in 1926, although that coin was not intended for everyday circulation in the same way.
