Waterline replacement closes part of Cesar E. Chavez Drive
Written by KAYLA WILLIAMS · Filed October 16, 2026

A waterline replacement project is affecting travel on Cesar E. Chavez Drive between North Avenue Q and North Sherman Avenue.
The work began October 12 and calls for the road to be closed in both directions throughout construction. Traffic is being directed to Baylor Street while crews replace the piping.
The project targets aging water infrastructure, with the stated goal of improving function and reducing future maintenance. Rink’s Lease Service is handling the replacement.
The announced closure applies to the section between the 2 avenues. Drivers approaching that stretch should follow the posted detour and allow time to reach businesses or other destinations nearby.
A completion date was not included in the notice reviewed for this update. Motorists should follow posted detour signs while crews work on the closed section.
