West Texas Senate candidates split over schools and health care

Republican state Sen. Kevin Sparks and Democratic challenger John Betancourt offered different approaches to education and health care during their October 12 debate for Texas Senate District 31.

Sparks defended school choice and highlighted legislative work involving mental health facilities, wildfire response and rural needs. Betancourt argued for greater public school investment and warned that vouchers could weaken those schools.

On health care, Betancourt supported Medicaid expansion and help for rural hospitals. Sparks emphasized efficiency and changes to how services operate.

Early voting for the November 3 election runs October 19 through October 30. Registered voters may use any early voting location in their county of registration.

Residents checking their sample ballots can review which contests apply to their address before making a trip to vote.
