Texas sued over voter registration backlog

Voting rights groups sued Texas over more than 500,000 delayed voter registration records submitted through the state’s online driver license system.

The League of Women Voters of Texas and MOVE Texas Civic Fund allege the failures violated a 2021 settlement requiring a reliable registration option during qualifying online license transactions.

The case was filed in Bexar County’s 224th District Court. It seeks a functioning process, records explaining the failures and proof of compliance.

The backlog included records dating to October 2025. County election offices received delayed applications after a software error affected the DPS portal. The lawsuit says some voters still face registration problems before the November 3 election.

DPS and secretary of state officials are expected to respond in court. A judge has not ruled on the alleged settlement breach.

Lubbock voters with questions about an earlier application should have the county elections office check their individual record.
